Children's Indoor Playground

In designing a children's indoor playground, the challenge was keeping each area of use separate and distinct while leaving the space light and open. The client wanted several areas of play: an area with electronic games, party rooms, dining area, gift redemption, beauty parlor for princess parties, and play area for small children.

The effect was achieved by using the set design techniques of colour, lighting and texture to differentiate the uses. The lighting is important both for separation of space and creation of mood. Electronic games need dim lighting for maximum impact, while brighter light was required for eating and party areas. This was achieved with careful planning and varying the type of fixtures and controls in each area for maximum flexibility.

Brighter lighting and colors were used to draw the eye toward the food areas and gift redemption areas. The quieter areas for eating and the small children's play area were partially separated from the electronic games by a half wall. Each area was further decorated with beautiful murals designed by students at a local school to further highlight the individual uses of each section.

The bright colours and inviting entry help to create a festive mood, and invite the families to explore and have fun.
